Mark McKinnon, a top political strategist and former advisor to President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain, penned a column for TIME.com about the GOP’s losing stance on LGBT equality.

The column outlines how Republican lawmakers are erring in pushing anti-LGBT legislation such as the anti-trans bathroom law in North Carolina and the so-called “religious refusal” law in Indiana.

“It’s time for a reckoning within the GOP when it comes to LGBT equality: We must embrace equality and push for nondiscrimination protections not just because it seems to be the politically correct thing to do. We should do it because it’s a genuine reflection of our values, and an opportunity to lead,” McKinnon writes.
